Veteran table tennis player and reigning CWG champion Sharath Kamal will be India's flag bearer at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games while legendary boxer MC Mary Kom was on Thursday appointed the chef de mission of the country's contingent. Sharath Kamal symbolises "the unity and spirit of our contingent as they compete on the Olympic stage", the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said in a statement while making the announcement. The IOA has not yet named a female flag bearer but sources said that the sports body will not "compromise" on gender equality and will select a woman athlete later since many quotas for the Games, starting July 26, are yet to be filled.

The 41-year-old table tennis player symbolises "the unity and spirit of our contingent as they compete on the Olympic stage", the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) said in a statement while making the announcement. "It has been an unbelievable three weeks. From not even sure of Olympic berth to playing the way I did in Singapore last week, jumping 54 spots in the rankings to being named India's flag bearer," Kamal told PTI.

The Indian men's and women's teams on Monday scripted history as they qualified for the Olympics for the first time ever based on their world rankings. After the conclusion of the World Team Championships Finals in Busan last month, which served as the last qualifying event for the Paris Olympics, seven spots in the team events remained, which have been awarded to sides based on their rankings.
Both the Indian men's and women's teams ended their challenge at the ongoing World Team Table Tennis Championships after defeats to South Korea and Chinese Taipei respectively on Wednesday. Moving to the quarterfinals would have ensured an Olympics 2024 quota for both Indian teams, but the dreams of earning a direct qualification through this tournament is over. However, India can still fulfill its Paris 2024 dream depending on their world ranking at the month-end. The men's team was defeated by South Korea 3-0.
Harmeet Desai won the decisive fifth rubber to steer Indian men's team to pre-quarterfinals while the women's team strolled into the last-16 stage of the World Table Tennis Team Championships with an easy 3-0 victory in Busan, South Korea on Wednesday. The men's team had to toil hard to edge Kazakhstan 3-2 but the women's team had an easy day out as it blanked Italy 3-0 to move to the next round. The men's team will now compete against the powerful South Koreans while the women will take on Chinese-Taipei, later on Wednesday.
The Indian men's and women's sides registered contrasting wins in their final group games to progress to the knock-out phase of the Word Table Tennis Team Championships on Tuesday. While the Indian women's team pulled off a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Spain, the men's side brushed aside New Zealand 3-0. The Indian women's team, the stronger side on paper, were pushed against the wall but found a way to scrape past the Spaniards after Sreeja Akula and Manika Batra lost the first two singles of the tie. After Ayhika Mukherjee kept India in the contest with a win in the third singles, Manika and Sreeja returned to get the job done in the fourth and fifth singles.
