How 'Guru Gary' is using cricket to keep slum kids away from drugs

Notorious for drugs and crime and afflicted by large-scale poverty, the Khayelitsha township here is better known for being one of the biggest slums on the planet. But World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten is attempting to change the image for good through cricket. The idea struck him when he returned to his home here after guiding India to a World Cup title in 2011. "When I came back from India, I wanted to have a look at cricket in our poorest neighbourhoods in Cape Town," Kirsten recalled in an interview with PTI. He ended up touring Khayelitsha, situated 30km south-east of Cape Town and considered one of the most unsafe areas where a majority of the inhabitants still live in shacks.

PCB Likely To Announce New Pakistan Head Coach By This Date

Pakistan will announce new set of coaches for red and white ball formats for the national team by the end of this month, a Cricket Board (PCB) official said on Friday. The PCB also confirmed that besides South Africa's Gary Kirsten and Australia's Jason Gillespie, the board had received applications from a couple of reputed coaches by the April 15 deadline. The PCB official said that while they are interested in Kirsten and Gillispie, the new applicants are also in the fray. "The PCB chairman, Mohsin Naqvi has made it clear that the long-term appointments of coaches will be done through a due process and all commitments would be met by the board," the report added.

Pakistan Selectors Mohammad Yousuf, Abdul Razzaq Likely To Coach Team In T20Is vs New Zealand

The Pakistan Cricket Board has decided to appoint Muhammad Yousuf and Abdul Razzaq as interim head coach and assistant coach, respectively, for the home T20 series against New Zealand later this month. The decision comes as negotiations with foreign coaches Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillispie continue for a long-term role. A reliable source in the board said that while matters with Gillispie were nearly complete as he had agreed to take over as head coach of the red-ball format, discussions with Kirsten were not yet finalised as he is busy in the Indian Premier League.

Gujarat Titans Coach's Honest Verdict On Shubman Gill As Captain In IPL 2024

Gujarat Titans might have made a topsy-turvy start to IPL 2024 but their mentor Gary Kirsten backed Shubman Gill, and said the young captain will learn the nuances of making tactical decisions in the fast-paced world of T20 cricket. Titans, the IPL 2022 winner and the current runners-up, are now placed seventh on the table with two points from as many matches after a win over Mumbai Indians and defeat against Chennai Super Kings. "It's a fast game. You are making tactical decisions on a regular basis. It's not like Test cricket where it unfolds over a long period of time. "I've been really impressed with the way he's conducted himself as a leader," Kirsten told the media on the eve of GT's day-game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Sunday. Kirsten said Gill, who took over as GT skipper after Hardik Pandya moved to MI, has adjusted to his role well.

On Shubman Gill Replacing Hardik Pandya As Gujarat Titans Captain, Coach Gary Kirsten's Honest Take

The Gujarat Titans reached the final of the Indian Premier League for two consecutive seasons under Hardik Pandya's leadership, winning one of them. But, with Hardik now leading the Mumbai Indians, the Gujarat Titans' baton has fallen in the hands of Shubman Gill, a young batter who doesn't have much leadership experience. With Hardik now leading the Mumbai Indians, the spotlight would be on Gill to see how efficiently he steps into the void left by the India all-rounder. As far as the franchise's batting coach Gary Kirsten is concerned, the support staff will do everything needed to help Gill succeed in the leadership role.

"Had I Not Fought With Gautam Gambhir...": Retired India Star's Big Revelation

Former Indian cricket team batter Manoj Tiwary opened up about how a fight with then skipper Gautam Gambhir cut short his stint with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Tiwary was an integral part of the side between 2010 and 2013 with the batter scoring the winning boundary when the franchise claimed their first IPL title under Gambhir's captaincy. However, in an interview with Anandabazar Patrika following his retirement from domestic cricket, Tiwary said that he would have played for KKR for 2-3 more years if the spat with Gambhir did not happen and the added association with the franchise would likely have resulted in more financial gains for the cricketer.
